The two weeks after the ph.d dissertation defense of Nov. 30, 2005 was crazy. Although the defense went very well, I had the pressure of time constraint before the deadline of final submission.
What was even worse was that I lost the drive to work on the revision. After hanging around in parties and dinners with friends, finally I submitted a revision to my advisors on Monday Dec. 12. My advisors were very kind to give back the feedback in two days, and I had to hurry up making corrections, finalizing the format, sending the manuscript to Kinko’s for printing.
For the whole week of Dec. 12 – 16, there was only one or two hours for sleep each day, and I spent the whole day and whole night in office. Even to eat was a luxury because there was just no time for it!! It was a nightmare, but also a most productive period in my ph.d career.
Finally, at 9:30am on Friday morning, the dealine for dissertation submission, everything was done. I made it ! The big and small envelopes containing the various copies of my dissertation were handed in to the Graduate School at 10:30am, two hours before the dealine ends. What a relief ! To my surprise, I even got a gift from the Grad School, a blue Korea-made scarf.
The worst things were to come. There were 37 student papers to be graded by Monday, Dec. 19, and I did not do any of them at all by Saturday, Dec. 17, due to the crazy schedule for the dissertation. In addition, I had job application materials to send out also on the same day, and on Thursday there would be TA exam to grade.
I didn’t know how I mangaged to finish everything, but by Friday, Dec. 23, all was done. Marie invited me and her TAs to Pasta Pasta for lunch. I ate a lot !! For the next few days, I wanted to do nothing but sleep.
